Europe: storm hazard map
The map shows that the areas in Europe that are more exposed towards the northern Atlantic experience the highest threat of winter storms. Tropical storms only occur in the overseas territories. The storm hazard gradually lessens towards southeast Europe as the climate changes from Atlantic influenced towards more continental.
The more continental climate zones experience more extreme temperatures (hotter summers and colder winters) than the marine influenced ones but they do not have the direct impact of winter storms from the northern Atlantic Ocean.
