Evacuation action during torrential rain considering situation awareness error using protection motivation theory
In this study, the researchers conducted a questionnaire survey on evacuation during the July 2018 torrential rain event in western Japan. They analyzed the process leading to evacuation while considering situation awareness errors in naturalistic decision-making using protection motivation theory. The authors successfully demonstrated that the process of developing evacuation intentions could be explained using the protection motivation theory framework.
The results suggest the potential for promoting evacuation action by enhancing the understanding of weather and evacuation information through disaster prevention and mitigation education, proper understanding of latent disaster risks in the surrounding area, and activation of triggers to promote situation awareness before a crisis develops.
