Five-year review of the Mauritius strategy for the further implementation of the programme of action for the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States - Report of the Secretary-General

This report reviews the progress made in addressing the vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy, which includes natural and environmental disasters as one of its themes and means of implementation. It addresses their increased vulnerability due to climate change, the global financial crisis, the food and fuel crises, and the large-scale natural disasters such as cyclones, storm surges, landslides, droughts, floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and oil and chemical spills.

It asserts that disaster risk reduction measures are a good investment in the future that can lead to economic savings and help to avert hardship. It also advocates for a more comprehensive approach and for disaster risk reduction to be an integral part of national development planning, in line with the recommendations of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. Its overall aim is to provide a global synthesis of the preparatory national and regional five-year reviews of the Mauritius Strategy for the consideration of Member States.
