Flood risk and water management in the Netherlands: a 2012 update
This report describes Dutch context of flood risk management, institutions involved, disasters that influence flood risk policy and disaster management, flood protection standards for flood defenses, financial issues, urban planning and the choice not to insure against flood risk.
It also discusses the influence of European legislation and presents specific issues on disaster management and response. Some current and unresolved problems are also covered, including financing the next round of major revision of flood defenses 2015-2023, preparing Dutch flood risk management for 2050 and 2100, and the issues that arise when applying different European directives.
