Gender and sexual minorities: Health considerations in times of disaster
The report highlights how disasters exacerbate existing inequalities and stresses the importance of inclusive policy development, sensitive communication strategies, and legal considerations tailored to the needs of these communities. It also underscores the need for better research, community and ally capacity building, and ensuring equitable and effective crisis response.
Whilst launched in time for World AIDS Day (01 December), the report extends beyond conventional focus areas and explores broader healthcare concerns. The considerable focus on HIV/AIDS and its impacts on the LGBTQIA+ community, whilst understandable, threatens to overlook the varied and diverse needs these communities require. Work on healthcare activities before, during and after a disaster should be a more nuanced consideration than simply HIV prevention and transgender hormone therapy.
