Human security in a changing environment
Objectives and purpose of the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security
Understanding the causes of vulnerability is a prerequisite for ensuring human security and decreasing human vulnerability, but it is not enough. The complexity of the factors that determine vulnerability and the ability to cope with extreme natural forces call for improvement of the scientific basis for decision making in disaster reduction.
The United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security has been conceived and created to spearhead UNU’s thrust into this challenge area. The Institute is supported by the Ministry of Education and Research of Germany and the Ministry of Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
