Hyper-risks in a hyper-connected world: A call for critical reflective response to develop organizational resilience
The fundamental characteristics of today's world is its interconnectedness and interconnectivity that lends itself to a 'risk society'. This means that the consequences of disasters extend beyong borders having regional and global reach. This document explains how to tackle hyper-risks which may lead to unpredictable events with massive impact.
To counter these emerging risks in the context of organizations, the publication discusses 'reflective response' which is composed of:
- individual reflection, or 'making sense' about an activity or a process;
- organized reflection, or creating collective and organizationally focused processes for reflection; and
- critical reflection, which includes 'organizational learning' (processes through which learning takes place) and 'learning organization' (characteristics of an organization that learns).
This document is an input paper for the 2015 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction.
