The impact of urban heat islands: assessing vulnerability in Indonesia
This study seeks to carry out an assessment of the urban heat islands (UHI) phenomena, alongside a vulnerability assessment of the effects of UHI, in two Indonesian cities of differing size, Jakarta and Bandar Lampung. The study assesses the existence of UHI by measuring local air temperature. It applies the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) definition of vulnerability to measure the exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity of the population in the urban area. On the basis of these findings, the report also lays out recommendations for targeted responses in terms of building awareness of potential UHI impacts in at-risk areas, as well as offering possible pathways in terms of adaptation of risk management and urban planning and development processes in Indonesian cities.
