Index-based crop insurance project

The SANASA network has about 400,000 of its members engaged in agricultural activities and about 47 per cent of the members live on less than Rs. 5,000 (about 50$ US) a month. The main risks affecting crops are linked to drought, flooding and insects. The index-based crop insurance project was centered on the adaptation of a weather-based crop insurance model used in India, to the Sri Lankan environment, including the development and testing of new methodologies to streamline the overall process, improve delivery mechanisms, and raise the awareness of insurance among rural Sri Lankans.
