Mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into housing sector in Sri Lanka
This case study highlights the experience of undertaking a priority implementation partnership (PIP) on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the planning, design, approval and construction of housing in Sri Lanka. It aimes to bring change in the entire system of housing development by calling for adoption of non-structural and structural mitigation measures in planning and implementation of development activities, and highlighting the importance of hazard resilient housing and revision of building codes for reducing disaster risk. It gives some recommendations and highlighted some areas for improvement in the process.
The project was implemented by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights with technical support from Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) and with financial support from Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).
