Mapping flood impacts on mortality at European territories of the Mediterranean region within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework

Despite advancements in flood risk management, floods continue to threaten lives and health, intensified by climate change. This study examines flood-related mortality in Mediterranean EU regions using international data, uncovering distinct spatial patterns and varied temporal trends. It evaluates the potential of existing datasets for monitoring flood impacts and emphasizes alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key recommendations include:

• Standardizing and improve data collection methods to accurately monitor flood-related mortality.
• Creating region-specific flood risk management plans for vulnerable Mediterranean areas;
• Ensuring flood mitigation efforts are integrated with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals;
