Mapping the impacts of natural hazards and technological accidents in Europe: an overview of the last decade
This report assesses the occurrence and impacts of disasters and the underlying hazards such as storms, extreme temperature events, forest fires, water scarcity and droughts, floods, snow avalanches, landslides, earthquakes, volcanoes and technological accidents in Europe for the period 1998-2009. It also addresses the advances in disaster risk reduction and management through a set of instruments developed by the European Union as well as the establishment of national strategies and national platforms for disaster risk reduction. Moreover, the report focuses on data gaps and lack of information on past events and their impacts, and possible ways to improve the knowledge base.
