Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium flagship programmes
This document presents the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC), its objectives and structure, as well as its five flagship areas of immediate action for disaster risk management: (i) school and hospital safety; (ii) emergency preparedness and response capacity; (iii) flood management in the Kosi river basin; (iv) integrated community-based disaster risk reduction/ management; and (v) policy/ institutional support for disaster risk management.
Using examples, it addresses increasing vulnerability of both Nepal's urban and rural areas to earthquakes, floods, landslides, windstorms, hailstorms, fire, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and avalanches. It features the progresses of the government of Nepal in developing institutional and financial frameworks in line with the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters (HFA) and outlines challenges and achievements to date.
