Proceedings of the national conference on spate irrigation in Pakistan
This report provides summary of the main discussions on spate management during the National Conference in Pakistan, the legal framework, successful spate structures and its contribution to the floods risk management.
An important resource but one often forgotten is the use of floodwater for beneficial use. Being participatory in nature, environment friendly and low cost, the spate irrigation is a unique system in which flash flows of floods from ephemeral River is diverted to fields on one or both sides by constructing earthen structure, through canals. National Conference on Spate Irrigation was the first of its kind in Pakistan to explore possibilities of better managing flash flood flows for well being of communities living in mountainous regions of Pakistan.
