Report on 2008-2009 'Water-related risk management course of disaster management policy program'

This report addresses the establishment in a multi-disciplinary way of well-balanced risk management before, during, and after disasters in order to reduce the impacts of natural disasters. It intends to support disaster management experts through professional education and training so that they can develop appropriate disaster management policies and techniques based on local conditions and needs, and communicates with local people to raise awareness toward disaster prevention in communities.
The report details the course activities and the achievements of a program aimed at fostering solution-oriented practitioners with solid theoretical and engineering bases who can serve for planning and practices of flood management within the framework of integrated river basin management at all levels from nations to localities.
The one year Master’s program was conducted from 29 September 2008 to 19 September 2009 in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS).
