Rivermed
This game is part of a project elaborated by a Mediterranean network (Catalogna, Piemont, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA)) of educators in the field of natural hazard reduction. This network has produced a kit of pedagogical tools on floods, addressing essentially school children, composed of a CD-Rom (prepared by the Cooperativa Erica, Piemont), an itinerant exhibition (produced by l'Escola da Natura del Corredor and the Centro d'Educacio Ambiental de Santa Marta, Catalogna), and a role game produced by the Centre Méditerranéen de l'Environnement, France. The role game, presented in a nice wooden box, aims to enable its players to become virtual actors for managing land-use planning around a river subject to more or less important floods. The game proposes the actors to build two types of buildings (plants, warehouses) on different territories around a river at different altitudes exposed to natural hazards (flood, avalanche, landslide, rockfall, forest fire, earthquake, meteorological phenomena). The players are split into teams by professional categories: industrialists, building promoters, farmers, traders, tourist agents and mayors. Each card features a village. Each village is governed by a team constituting the municipal council and owning a territory, a village file with a price list, a map and he rules of the game. The aim is to achieve in 8 game rounds the development scheme of the team's village as described in the communal file with a minimum of damages. A game master ensures that the game is played in a fair manner. (UNESCO)
