Saving lives and property by mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the roads sector of Bhutan

This advocacy note seeks to provide an evidence-based case for mainstreaming disaster risk reduction (DRR) into Bhutan's road sector as a cost-effective choice supporting local, regional and national development. It provides evidence from cyclone Aila, which brought continuous rainfall over 25−26 May 2009 and resulted in unprecedented floods, and calls for enhanced risk-sensitive measures when building new roads and improving old ones.

This advocacy document is part of a pair developed in partnership with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center. These documents are aimed at creating awareness of the importance of considering disaster risk reduction as an essential part of any new development project in the education and road sectors in Bhutan.
