Strategic framework for adaptation to climate change in the Dniester River Basin
The Strategic Framework is the result of joint efforts by international experts and organizations from Moldova and Ukraine to protect and sustain the use of natural resources in the Dniester River basin under the conditions of a changing global climate. This Framework promotes transboundary cooperation for adaptation to a changing hydrological regime, an increase in natural disasters and corresponding economic losses.
The Framework brings together data on the current and possible future trends in climate change in the Dniester basin. These trends are characterized by higher air temperatures in the basin, drier conditions in the southern part of the basin and increased intensity and more uneven distribution of precipitation. The existing natural, technical and organizational capacities of the basin for adaptation make it possible to neutralize the undesirable trends to some extent.
The natural potential of the basin’s ecosystems, especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Dniester, could also be used for effective adaptation. Finally, the ratification and entry into force of the Treaty on Cooperation on the Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Dniester River Basin should promote fuller realization of the potential offered by cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine for the joint resolution of problems in the basin.
