Taking action on climate change in the Seychelles: a preparedness for climate change case study

This paper reports on the Preparedness for Climate Change Programme (PfCC) which aims at strengthening risk reduction measures and preparing for the challenges of climate change. It is intended for countries particularly vulnerable to climate change to gain a better understanding of climate change and its impacts and to identify country-specific adaptation measures in-line with risks.

The paper specifically reports on the Seychelles, which was one of the thirty-nine countries to participate in the programme between 2006 and 2009. It identifies the key areas for action as: (i) coastal erosion from sea level rise and coastal flooding; (ii) landslides from extreme rainfall; and (iii) increased incidence of water-borne diseases. It then presents the impact of the project, the lessons learned from it, and further actions to be taken.
