Urban participatory risk assessment tools: a review from Bangladesh
This document is a summary of a research that was carried out to examine whether the application of certain participatory tools that had helped rural communities worldwide assess their own risk and design strategies to reduce this risk would be applicable directly to urban areas as well.
The study found that the following tools have proved to be successful in urban areas as well: (i) hazard mapping; (ii) hazard and vulnerability ranking; (iii) cause-and-effect diagramming; (iv) community consultation and interview; (v) stakeholder workshops. The following tools have proved to be challenging: (i) seasonality analysis; (ii) hazards timeline/trend analysis; (iii) livelihood resource assessment.
