This paper explains how Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) projects can play an important role in ensuring California (USA) manages its groundwater sustainably. The publication explains the benefits and economic costs of MAR as an effective and affordable way to balance local groundwater decisions with regional and statewide management

The benefits of MAR projects are the following among others:

  • They can allow agencies to tailor management to the local community’s available resources, as well as the local community’s needs.
  • They provide increased flexibility in water management and increased resilience to drought.
