Volume and quality of media coverage of climate change and El Nino related disasters in Kenya
This study aims to assess the impact of a sensitization and training programme for journalists on the quantity and quality of reporting of climate change related disasters on different media platforms in Kenya. The study also compiles data on the following media-related topics:
- The nature of content, reporting and writing of climate change and disaster stories in Kenyan media;
- Journalists' perceptions of challenges, opportunities and lessons on media coverage of the climate change and disasters;
- The average level of understanding that a journalist has on various disaster and climate related issues.
The Media Council of Kenya tracked journalists’ performance after training and the report shows a substantive increase in both quality and depth of reporting particularly in the print media. This media monitoring report provides background data on the situation in Kenya, 15 main findings and 11 recommendations for journalists.
