Water in a heated world
In a climatically and geopolitically heated world, the challenges surrounding water are becoming substantially more acute. Uncertainty is becoming the norm; the limits of controllability could be exceeded. This report details ongoing challenges with water, including usage and geopolitical risks, as well as steps being taken to support climate-resilient water management. The report gives recommendations on steps that may be taken to protect water quality and improve water governance.
This report argues that a climate-resilient water-management regime is needed with a long-term view that combines thinking about blue and green water and is able to react flexibly to changes. It must incorporate existing, self-organized structures and needs to be accompanied and supported by science. An International Water Strategy with regional platforms should be developed.
