Weather extremes in a changing climate: hindsight on foresight (note)
This short note provides a brief extract from WMO's annual report on the Status of the Global Climate and a summary for 2010. It summarises significant events observed during the past year, including El Niño/La Niña episodes which have an important impact on temperatures and precipitation, and comparing them with historical records. It is based on the activities of the WMO and its co-sponsored programmes, which include observing and monitoring of, as well as research on, weather, climate and water, and their extremes.
It considers: (i) heat waves and extreme high temperatures; (ii) cold waves, extreme low temperatures and snow storms; (iii) intense storms, flooding and heavy rainfall; (iv) severe or prolonged droughts; and (v) tropical cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons.
