Wildfire hazard and risk assessment
This document is the sixth in a series of hazard-specific risk assessment modules, compiled as part of the Words into Action Guidelines on National Disaster Risk Assessment by UNISDR. This section provides a general introduction to the assessment of wildfire hazard. Recent advances in landscape wildfire behaviour modelling have led to a number of new tools and approaches for applying risk frameworks to wildfire management problems which allow land managers to estimate all of the above-mentioned primary wildfire risk components to a number of high-value resources located within forest stands and lands.
The combination of wildfire exposure, vulnerability and risk assessment has been widely used as an integrated framework for holistic fire management in many fire-prone parts in the world. The document also outlines the incorporation of risk assessment into national DRR measures and touches on the threat of wildfire to cultural heritage and archaeological sites.
