WMO statement on the status of the global climate in 2008
Helping to build and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change, this 2008 issue of the WMO annual report records positive global temperature anomalies. These include several extreme weather and climate events, of which, the tropical cyclone Nargis which hit Myanmar in May 2008 causing catastrophic destruction and more than 70 000 fatalities, severe flooding, extreme heatwaves and droughts, and a marked decline of Arctic sea ice.
