No. 27, June 2005
This special issue examines water-scarcity and climate issues facing the tourism industry.
The highest growth rates of tourism are found in coastal areas with naturally low rainfall and maximum daily sunshine hours. This is true in most Mediterranean countries but also in other destinations with arid or semi-arid climates. This has led to direct competition between water demand for traditional purposes, such as agriculture and water demand for the tourism industry. In these areas, where water scarcity is likely to be amplified as a result of climate variability and change, different water-resources management strategies have to be adopted if the growing tourism industry is to be maintained.
