This perspective document raises the issue of adaptation to floods, drought and other impacts of climate change on water by building resilience. It specifically focuses on the critical role of the environment in building resilience to climate change and reducing vulnerabilities in communities and economies, stating that well-functioning watersheds and intact floodplains and coasts provide water storage, flood control and coastal defence, and introducing them as ‘natural infrastructure’ for adaptation.
