Climate justice: seeking a global ethic
This report seeks to raise awareness of individual responsibilities to find sustainable solutions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and sets out the key policies on which Caritas is campaigning at international, regional and national levels. In this paper, Caritas urges states to adopt regional approaches to addressing the causes and consequences of climate change, including the promotion of dialogue and cooperation between neighbouring countries in the management of natural resources. It appeals to governments to develop and enforce national policy frameworks that facilitate the identification and implementation of climate solutions at the levels of local governments, businesses, civil societies and families.
To do so, it focuses on the ethical, moral and theological dimensions of the climate change crisis as presented by Caritas Internationalis Reference Group on Climate Justice by: reporting on the consequences of extreme weather events; examining the theological, moral and ethical arguments relating to climate change; looking at the work Caritas organisations are doing in the field to help people overcome the devastating effects of climate change, and what Caritas Internationalis can do at a global level to campaign for real and effective change.
