The global ocean observing system: a summary for policy makers
This booklet describes the purpose, value and products of the international observational system, the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), which ensures global monitoring to provide ocean services for the purpose of sustainable development of ocean resources, protection from ocean hazards, and delivery of myriad other societal benefits. It explains how ocean modelling and forecasting, especially the forecasting in coastal seas, can help reduce coastal cities, ports and industry's vulnerability to threats such as inundation from storm surges, hurricanes, and tsunami, as well as sea level rise and changes in temperature, salinity and currents associated with climate change. It also highlights the necessity of GOOS to understand the impact of changing climate, assess regional vulnerability, and monitor the efficacy of adaptation and mitigation efforts.
