MDG Gap Task Force report 2012:
As a pressing priority, this report calls for affordable access to new technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation and disaster risk management, recalling the commitment of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the conference held in Durban from 28 November to 11 December 2011 and the need to make sure the Green Climate Fund and the Technology Mechanism become operational in 2012.
It also highlights than making further progress in reducing and managing risk will require better and more systematic recording of disaster losses and impacts, and the institutionalization of national disaster inventory systems; and offers some policy recommendations in this regard (see the Access to new technologies chapter for more details).
While each annual report has shown the additional progress and greater efforts needed if the world is to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on schedule, the message of the present report shows difficulty in identifying areas of significant new progress, and for the first time there are signs of backsliding. More than 20 United Nations agencies are represented on the MDG Gap Task Force, including the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR).
