Human mobility in the context of loss and damage from climate change: needs, gaps, and roles of the convention in addressing loss and damage
This document discusses the existing gaps in addressing human mobility made necessary due to climate change, including technical assistance, financial assistance, and planning, and suggests ways in which the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UN FCCC) can play a role in addressing loss and damage linked to human mobility and climate change. The document is divided into five sections: (i) section one introduces the international actors in place, including the UN FCCC and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), and discusses the impacts of climate change on society, vulnerable livelihoods, and human mobility; (ii) section two explains the needs related to human mobility in the context of loss and damage; (iii) section three addresses the importance of international coordination in order to ensure coherence in policy related to loss and damage; (iv) section four summarizes the potential role of the UN FCCC in addressing issues arising from human displacement, migration and planned relocation related to global anthropogenic climate change; and (v) section five concludes the document, foretelling the need for a more nuanced assessment in the near future.
