Protected areas protecting people: a tool for disaster risk reduction - natural solutions
This paper documents the critical role of protected areas in reducing vulnerability and disaster mitigation, highlighting: (i) the key benefits from protected areas and the ways in which protected areas can help to mitigate hazards such as flooding, landslide and avalanche, storm surge, drought, fire and hurricane; (ii) the economic benefits of maintaining natural ecosystems to protect against disaster; (iii) the challenge; (iv) the strengthening of the role of protected areas through analysis, planning, management, financing and training; and (v) the promotion of integrated solutions.
