Preparedness to prevent desert locust plagues in the central region - an historical review
Desert locust invasions affect an area extended from the Atlantic Coast of Northern Africa to eastern India. Plagues arise, however, in the arid and semiarid recession core region. Desert locust breeding and migration are synchronized with rainy seasons, a fact that has made possible since 1938 the elaboration of a strategy for the control of their gregarization process. Deeper knowledge of the biologic mechanisms driving their multiplication has led to enormous increase in the countries' preparedness to insect infestations.
This publication was commissioned by EMPRES CR to systematically analyze information on early warning and control capacities in involved countries, to assess their level of preparedness to prevent plagues.
