Enhancing seismic preparedness in Istanbul
This paper is part of a series highlighting the World Bank's achievements in disaster risk management (DRM) initiatives. It presents a comprehensive program intended to help Istanbul prepare for and respond to earthquakes. It describes: (i) its context; (ii) the World Bank approach; (iii) the results and achievements; (iv) the lessons learned; and (iv) the next steps, including to continue expanding Turkey's DRM agenda to other high-risk areas or priority sectors and to develop a National Disaster Risk Management Program (NDRMP) as a multi-stakeholder platform to provide guidance to a wide range of institutions for preparing risk reduction projects.
