Building resilient communities across Indonesia
This paper is part of a series highlighting the World Bank's achievements in disaster risk management initiatives. It presents the progress made by the government of Indonesia in enhancing community resilience in urban settings through collaborating with community leaders in increasing awareness of disaster risk mitigation and scaling up preventive measures including eco-resilient settlements, safer evacuation routes, and landslide mitigation techniques. It describes: (i) its context; (ii) the World Bank approach; (iii) the results and achievements; (iv) the lessons learned; and (iv) the next steps, including: to replicate this Community Driven Development (CDD) approach to scale up strengthening local infrastructure and invest in the upgrading of urban neighborhoods in a sustainable manner; to replicate these resilience-enhancing measures, empowering at-risk communities, and strengthening disaster resilience across urban areas prone to natural disasters; to make further efforts to facilitate partnerships with the private sector, universities, and research institutions, which will allow better dissemination of knowledge related to community-based disaster risk management, including on including local flood zoning, quick impact infrastructure upgrading, and community risk reduction planning.
