Slowing the flow: a natural solution to flooding problems
This report discusses sustainable flood management across Scotland. Specifically, the River Devon Natural Flood Management Demonstration Site which shows how a whole catchment approach to sustainable flood management is achieved and how these principles can be applied to any river in Scotland.
The document presents the following key actions:
- Implement legistlation on sustainable flood management;
- Lead by example and enact the statutory requirement for integration across government;
- Provide adequate resources and develop capacity to move forward;
- Establish one national advisory group for flooding;
- Inform, encourage and reward land managers to ‘farm water' where catchment flood management plans have identified effective action could be taken;
- Invest in Scottish higher education courses in integrated river basin management to produce the river basin and flood managers of the future;
- Invest in solutions on the ground.
