Floods again: What can be done differently?

As several parts of India face the fury of floods this year, it is worth examining what are reasons for India's high exposure to flooding and what can be done differently to mitigate the adverse impact of this recurrent catastrophe. There are many mitigation measures that can be adopted to reduce the debilitating impact of floods. Chiefly, district disaster management plans (DDMPs), forestry, cash transfers for flood relief, newer technology for early warning and capacity building of line departments on climate change represent an entry point to mainstream flood preparedness in the country.
