The role of riparian ecosystems in flood control
Riparian ecosystems are often exposed to degradation caused by deforestation and farming activities, which can increase the risk of flooding. This document outlines approaches to recovering and promoting the development of these ecosystems to reduce the risk of flooding, in addition to the use of “grey infrastructure” such as earth and rock dams.
This document demonstrates these ecosystem-based approaches with a project in the sub-basin of the Yapatera River in Piura (Northern Peru).
