Cities adapt to extreme rainfall: Celebrating local leadership
This book provides 20 case studies of local leadership working to reduce the risk of loss and damage from extreme rainfall. Most of the identified communities have a comprehensive strategy in place but the book reports on only one element of their overall effort. These case studies were chosen because the actions are consistent with best local practices identified by the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and they can be applied in most other communities across the country.
There is a well established science foundation for local action, and many communities have begun to lead the way to turn scientific research into local action. Most loss and damage from extreme rainfall is preventable through local actions to manage waste and stormwater infrastructure combined with homeowner participation to protect their property.
