Duties and Responsibilities

The objective of this consultancy is to create content packages for PreventionWeb, the knowledge sharing platform on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience.

The consultant will develop, write and edit content for PreventionWeb under the editorial guidance of the managing editor:

• Research and draft thematic web pages, web stories and editorial packages on DRR and disaster resilience issues for PreventionWeb. This involves synthesizing complex academic research, grey literature and/or news stories to create compelling web content.

• Update existing sections of the site to reflect latest trends and research in DRR

• Edit interviews and blog pieces authored by DRR experts and practitioners.

• Draft social media posts to promote PreventionWeb content.

• Other writing or editing tasks as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Experience in writing analytical texts relating to disaster risk reduction, resilience, climate change or international development is required. Experience as a science writer is an asset.

Academic Qualifications: First-level university degree (bachelor or similar) in journalism, communications, social sciences or related fields (including political science, public policy, international development, disaster studies, or similar) is required.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience, including writing web content, published articles, reports and/or academic texts is required.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this position, fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Additional Information

Must be able to work remotely using Slack, Skype and other remote communication tools. Stable Internet connection required.
