A diorama for disaster reduction awareness - Indonesia
Acknowledging the importance of education to raise disaster risk awareness and build communities’ resilience, the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) developed a disaster diorama as a mean to educate the public.
Indonesia Minister of Education, Anies Baswedan officially opened the diorama on Monday (04/04) at BNPB's office. He expressed his hope that students from across the country could come and learn, adding that BNPB played a vital role to educate communities regarding disaster, raise awareness, and address the disaster risks.
Recalling the 2009 disaster in West Sumatra that caused numerous deaths in the education community and the 2014 forest fire that led to school closings, Anies underscored the importance of cooperation between the BNPB and the Minister of Education. In this context, he urged to integrate disaster-learning materials into school curriculum so that students and academics could better identify risk and mitigate it.
The head of the disaster agency, Willem Rapangilei, noted that the diorama would be an important instrument to portray nature and disaster risk so raise public awareness and promote participation in disaster risk reduction attempts.
