Disaster prevention in municipal structures in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region
The AGEF organization from Berlin is planning the implementation of this project in order to reduce the arising risks. Within a pilot scheme which includes five villages and ten schools multipliers will be trained on the basics of disaster awareness. The project is focused on disaster awareness and safety precautions against earthquakes.
Up to 1,000 villagers and pupils are planned to be trained on early warning, first aid and initial treatment, planning of evacuation, search and rescue as well as on vacation, building and handling of emergency accommodation. However, the project is most of all designed to sensitize the population for natural hazards, with regard to both, early warning and responsiveness in the event of disaster.
A multipliers‘ training (training of the trainers) took place in Suleimaniya from 13 to 18 February 2010. Thus a further step was taken into the direction of an improved system of disaster precautions in the self-governed Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The responsible AGEF people take it that the community-based project will not only sensitize the North Iraqi society for this subject but the political decision-makers, too, thus supporting the development of governmental structures of precautions. There is a great interest in the subject anyway. A detailed TV report on the training in Suleimaniya should make sure that this interest will not die away.
During the one-year term of the disaster-risk-reduction project there will be a wide range of measures and activities. This project is funded with 150,000 Euros. The Federal Foreign Office of Germany will promote the project.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
