The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.

USA: NSF funds study of housing recovery after Hurricane Harvey

The National Science Foundation has given a research team a US $600,000 grant to study the recovery of mobile home parks in the Houston metropolitan area following Hurricane Harvey. This is the first longitudinal study to focus on the recovery of manufactured houses, which make up one in every five homes bought in the United States.

Rain-on-snow flood risk to increase in many U.S. mountain regions

New research shows that flooding caused by rain falling on snowpack could more than double by the end of this century in some areas of the western U.S. and Canada due to climate change. The greatest flood risk increases are projected for the Sierra Nevada, the Colorado River headwaters and the Canadian Rocky Mountains, places that often experience floods.

USA: The key triggers of the costly 2017 wildfire season

New research shows that three major 'switches' affecting wildfire -- fuel, aridity, and ignition -- were either flipped on or kept on longer than expected last year, triggering one of the largest and costliest US wildfire seasons in recent decades. Improved policy efforts to build better and burn better would promote adaptation to increasing wildfire in a warming world.
