Hotter, dryer - Greener? Dryland farming confronts climate change

One of the issues at the ongoing UN climate conference in Doha, Qatar is food security, especially in the light of increasing climate change induced droughts and heat waves. In fact, 40 per cent of global land mass are drylands, writes Bruce Campbell is Director of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security on the pages of the Huffington Post. To reduce the vulnerability of people living in this areas, a number of countries have started large-scale agricultural initiatives that support climate change adaptation, enhance food security and also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food and farming. Dr Campbell believes that such countries and the donor agencies funding adaptation initiatives should supported.
