New Era reports that a consultative workshop was organized by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on the presentation of the Disaster Management Act, Act 10 of 2012 and the Disaster Risk Management draft regulations to stakeholders and partners. The Act aims to provide for the establishment of institutions for disaster management, as well as an integrated and coordinated disaster management approach that focuses on preventing or reducing the risk of disasters in Namibia.
“Without each and every sector playing a role in disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery we will continue to encounter disaster damages, losses and unnecessary human suffering,” Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Nangula Mbako, said to Disaster management experts and stakeholders met in Windhoek yesterday.
New Era further reports on Mbako’s statements saying that the draft regulations should provide the legal tools to facilitate a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders and authorities to promote the rights of citizens and communities through timely access to quality information on disaster risks.
