'Strong regional network needed to face adverse impacts of climate change'

A strong regional network among Bangladesh, India, Nepal, China and Bhutan is needed to face the adverse impacts of climate change, said Chairman of the Privatization Commission Dr Mirza Abdul Jalil.

Speaking as the chief guest at a meeting on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate Change Adaptation he stressed on playing bold role at the government and non- governmental level to face the impact of global warming and reduce the risk of disaster through creating a regional network.

Dr Jalil said movement among the community, state and international level is essential to face such risk and underlined the need for coordinated efforts to resolve the economic and food crisis in the region.

Concern Universal-Bangladesh, in partnership with 67 partner NGOs organized the meeting at Mirpur in the city with Executive Director of 'Friendship Runa Khan in the chair.

Concern Universal conducted training on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction, local participation, resource collection and strategy for their usage, participatory monitoring and evaluation to strengthen capacity of 67 partner organisations of Bangladesh, India and Nepal in the last 19 months.

Three lakh beneficiaries from seven divisions of Bangladesh, India and Nepal have been brought under the 'Capacity Strengthening on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation' Project. The organizers said the activities will be extended to China and Bhutan.

The inaugural session was addressed by the Director General of National Academy for Planning and Development Dr. M A Kamal and Advisor for Cordaid-India, Munish Kaushik and Head of Education, Concern Universal-Bagladesh, Abdul Hamid.

Besides, Prof. Dr. M Shahidl Islam, Department of Geography & Environment, Dhaka University, Convener, State IAG, Paschim Banga, Father Reggie Fernandes and President, JCYCN, Nepal, Tilottam Paudel also took part in the discussion as experts.
