Following a report by UK-based think-tank Chatham House, it seems that the global economy could not withstand widespread disruption from a major natural disaster or attack by militants for more than a week. The report said that in general, governments and businesses are not sufficiently prepared in the face of disasters.

Several events such as the 2010 volcanic ash cloud, which disrupted the flights in Europe, Japan's earthquake and tsunami and Thailand's floods last year, showed that key sectors and businesses can be severely affected, as per AlertNet.
