Thanks to a contribution made by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the German Red Cross in close cooperation with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) has started a project in vulnerable communities on the Coast of Hatiya Island to enhance the capacities of these communities to prepare for and respond to an emergency or a natural hazard.
The Federal Foreign Office for the Federal Republic of Germany is contributing Euro 115.605 to the total project cost of Euro 138.738. The project runs between July 2010 and December 2011.
The overall goal of the project is to improve the early warning in particularly for vulnerable communities on the coast of Hatiya Island in Bangladesh. The local people and particularly women and children will be better prepared for extreme natural events such as cyclones and able to successfully protect their lives and livelihoods.
The project intends to benefit 29,100 people living in seven coastal settlements surrounding the seven cyclone shelters. The communities living within a perimeter of about 1.5 km around the shelters consist of around 300 to 400 families, i. e. approximately 2,000 people per shelter.
