The Business Days says that Durban had pushed the boundaries on the debate on climate change by arguing that adaptation — and not merely mitigation — was an equally, if not more, important approach for climate change for African cities. These cities were the most vulnerable to already unavoidable effects of climate change.
"Local governments need to be part of global climate change negotiations for the first time, when the 17th Congress of the Parties (COP17) conference is held in Durban later this year," the city’s mayor, James Nxumalo, said yesterday.
